It was too late to save humanity - the rising seas and failing crops had made sure of that - but it was not too late to ensure our legacy. A team of Earth's greatest minds built the Monolith. This was mankind's last chance to be remembered.
Embedded deep within the obelisk's cold metal surface was an intelligence unlike any seen before. Born not of flesh and blood, but of circuitry and programming. Unlike humanity, this artificial mind could never fade.
The destination for the Monolith was chosen carefully. Kepler 62-f. an Earth-like planet orbiting the star Kepler 62. The journey would take two millennia. All the research team could do was hope.
43 years after the Monolith's launch, the last city on Earth was abandoned, and humanity faded into the night.
